EDITING can be A SENSITIVE SUBJECT
But I hope this helps to clarify:
What does "editing" mean?
Editing is all of the changes made to enhance an image after the initial photo is taken. For most photographers editing is an important part of our art and signature photo style and it takes years to develop a consistent look.
In general photographers edit because...
- Regular computer software cannot open the type of files we use.
- We shoot to edit later. For example, I underexpose images to capture more detail knowing I'll bring the lightness back later on.
- Images aren't finished until they are edited. From color correcting to assure images look like reality to softening noise/grain and fixing lens distortion, editing is necessary to finish an image.
- Blemishes and unwanted distractions often make clients not want to use images.
What is my editing philosophy?
I edit every photo by fixing colors, removing camera flaws such as fringe etc. But when it comes to retouching here's my philosophy:
If it could be easily fixed during the shoot, or won't represent my client in a week, I will edit something in photo. This means, a single acne spot that will be gone in a few days or a stray hair I didn't see in the moment will be edited out. But, I will never alter someone's body shape or completely change their appearance.
This is so important to me because I truly want my clients to see themselves the way I see them: beautiful for who they are. Furthermore, I want my photos to capture how an individual truly looks during that period in their lifetime. Although it seems counterintuitive, I find that photos better capture the essence of people and the memories they create rather than their looks.
